Postgraduate research
-
Be clear why you are choosing to do research, does it fit into your career
plan? Do you want to become specialised in a particular area? Make sure
that this fits with your long-term career plan.
- The type of research and the location for your study are very important.
You will carry out research on a specific topic,
and you will become very specialised in this area. Note that in some
institutions, you can choose your own research topic, but in others an academic
member of staff will decide. You make sure that the research topic
suits you. The availability of funding may also influence your area
of study.
- Your potential supervisor is a vital factor. Try to talk to students
who have worked under the same supervisor. Your supervisor should guide you, motivate you,
give you the benefit
of his/her expertise and give constructive criticism. It is very
important that you have a good relationship with your supervisor.
